Bad experiences with the English language and racial slurs

Today I’ve misread SO many things. For example, on a sewing forum I read “I’m a pretty experienced sewer” and immediately thought of Ninja turtles.

*sigh*

I’m also not thinking before speaking, and am quite naive and not used to blatant bigotry, sexism, racism etc. so, on a customer complaint board somebody complained about a customer at a gas station yelling and complaining about (their words not mine, please, please don’t take offense) “sand n**gers” and I immediately exclaimed, aloud “What the f*ck is a sand n**ger?!”. Brett quietly explained, and I was really quite embarrassed. Good thing it was only us, if I was on a commuter train reading that on a laptop I might have been hit with an umbrella, or worse, or something. Actually, this is Canada, people tend not to beat people up. However, I probably would have been glared at and had to endure people whispering about the rude woman with no respect and probably been told how ignorant I was a few times.

But honestly! I didn’t know! I wouldn’t even been able to guess! I’m not exposed to assholes and racists on a regular basis. Frankly I’m not a better person for knowing the meaning of this nasty insult. Its actually pretty sad that people come up with hurtful and slanderous slurs. I don’t use horrible phrases like the one I mentioned above. People I know and deal with don’t use horrible nasty phrases. Why can’t we all be nice?

BE NICE TO EACH OTHER, DAMN YOU! BE NICE!

LOL @ Ninja Turtles. Stupid story – we got a bit lost coming home from New Jersey today and Eric was just like “Oh, we’re on an adventure.” “But we are in Jersey…it’s like an adventure in a sewer. Do I LOOK like a Ninja Turtle?”

The conversation continued wallowing in stupidity while I finally determined being a Ninja Turtle wouldn’t be too bad (pizza and ninjas are good), but I couldn’t handle taking my orders from a big rat.

I didn’t know what that word meant the first time I heard it either. People are awful.

It is apparently a racial slur for people who were born in, or had ancestors who live(d) in the middle east. The people in the middle east are not Caucasian. Its sandy there. Hence the slur.

I’m glad I’m not the only person who didn’t know what it meant though.

I’ve heard of a lot of other terms for those people, but that was never one of them. Thanks for the education. At least now we know who someone’s talking about by having that in our vocabulary. :-/

Is it a sad thing that I knew what that meant? *sigh* It’s not so much I’ve heard it used but given today’s political climate figured it out when I heard it the first time.

I hear you, why can’t we all play nice in the sandbox? The occassional small scrap is understandable but the really cruel and heartless things we do to each other on a daily basis is sad.

Someone I used to work with was a racist. I called her on it a couple of times, even called our team leader and her into a meeting. The majority of the slurs weren’t directed at me but at other ethnic groups. I have a hard enough time when I hear that stuff, but we worked with people in those same groups she was slamming. Our work has a strong anti-discrimination policy but I didn’t want to push it that far (figured that someone in one of those groups should have been the ones to take it that far if they felt it was that serious). She never completely stopped but at least she toned it down for the most part. We’ve distanced ourselves from her, partly because of that and partly because of her constant negativity.

That phrasing is beyond rude. :( You might want to check out rsdb.org just FYI.
